The book signing event we co-hosted with ORCA was held on July 2nd at the Vero Beach Book Center and featured New York Times best-selling author Mary Alice Monroe. It was a great success and showcased Mary Alice's new book "The Summer Wind." The book describes the complex relationship between three sisters and their grandmother while also intertwining the recent plight of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Our presence at the event was strong with four board members and our guest Adam Schaefer, who studies marine mammal diseases.
Mary Alice spoke passionately about the environment, her writing and her latest books. She was a great joy to be around and spoke at length about the characters in her book that struggle with societal issues familiar to many of us. She also spoke about the ties to our coastal environment and uplifting stories of bottlenose dolphins fighting disease and injury while touching our hearts with their intelligence.
We had a sign up sheet for those interested in our upcoming quarterly newsletter and spoke to people interested in volunteering for future events. A big thanks to Mary Alice and her assistants as well as Cynthia from the Book Center for inviting us.
